El Faro de Cádiz

Seafood restaurant and tapas bar in Cádiz's La Viña quarter, opened as a small fishermen's taberna by Gonzalo Córdoba in 1964 and now run by the third generation of his family.

About El Faro de Cádiz

Gonzalo Córdoba, who had worked at the bar El Pasiego, opened El Faro in 1964 as a small taberna in La Viña, the fishermen's and Carnaval quarter between the cathedral and La Caleta. The cooking was simple: Bay of Cádiz fish, fried or in marinero stews. Today his daughter Mayte Córdoba runs the house and her son Mario Jiménez is executive chef, the third generation.

The menu keeps the Cádiz classics: arroz caldoso gaditano (brothy seafood rice, €22), urta a la roteña (rock fish stewed with peppers and tomato, €24), dorada frita cut into cubes, rabo de toro (oxtail stew, €28), papas aliñadas (dressed potatoes with melva tuna) and tarantelo of almadraba tuna (€31). The separate bar, with marble counters and a fish display, serves smaller tapas, oysters and sea urchins.

Both open daily, 13:30–16:30 and 20:30–23:00 (website). Bar tapas cost about €3–6; a restaurant meal with wine is around €45–60 per person (2026). Book the dining room online; the bar takes walk-ins. There is a menu in English and a children's menu.

Lunch from 14:00 is the main sitting; arrive at 13:30 for a place at the bar. Dinner tables fill from 21:30. Almadraba tuna is freshest from late April to June. Tip: in Carnaval week (February) La Viña is packed, so book days ahead.
