Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art

The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez de la Frontera trains riders and Andalusian horses in classical dressage, and its show "How the Andalusian Horses Dance" is one of the great spectacles of southern Spain.

About Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art

The school grew out of the work of the Jerez horseman Álvaro Domecq Romero, who in the 1970s began staging displays of Andalusian horsemanship. It occupies the Recreo de las Cadenas, a 19th-century palace set in gardens, and its covered arena was designed by the architect José Luis Picardo in 1980.

The show, known as "How the Andalusian Horses Dance", is a choreographed display of classical dressage, carriage driving and work in hand, performed by riders in period costume to Spanish music. On other days visitors can watch the morning training sessions and tour the stables, saddlery and grounds.

The school also has museums devoted to equestrian art and to horse-drawn carriages. Show days vary through the year, so check the timetable and book ahead, especially in May when Jerez holds its Horse Fair.
