Kayaking in La Herradura Bay

Kayak and paddleboard trips from La Herradura beach, Almuñécar, to the cliffs and sea caves of Cerro Gordo and Punta de la Mona: rentals from €10 an hour, guided routes from €25 (2026).

About Kayaking in La Herradura Bay

La Herradura, a fishing village within Almuñécar, sits on a bay about 2 km wide between two headlands. To the west Cerro Gordo forms the Granada end of the Paraje Natural Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, a protected coast of cliffs, coves and seagrass; to the east the Punta de la Mona lighthouse looks over Marina del Este. The water is often clear, with rocky reefs that suit snorkelling.

Trips launch from the beach along Paseo Andrés Segovia. The favourite guided route heads west about 3 km below the Cerro Gordo cliffs, to the cove of Cantarriján before returning. A shorter route visits Calaiza and the sea caves at the tip of Cerro Gordo, where orange coral colours the rock, and on easterly days guides head for Punta de la Mona. When the sea is rough, sheltered trips leave from Marina del Este.

Windsurf La Herradura rents single kayaks for €10 an hour or €30 a half day, doubles for €15 an hour and paddleboards for €15. Marengo La Herradura runs guided kayak or paddleboard routes with snorkel stops from €20–25, leaving at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 17:00 daily in summer and at weekends the rest of the year (2026). Life jackets are provided; children paddle in doubles with an adult. Afternoon wind often raises the swell, so independent paddlers should stay inside the bay.

June to September has the warmest sea, and mornings are calmest. Bring a snorkel mask, water shoes, sun cream and a dry bag.
