Casa Rufino, Isla Cristina
Seafood restaurant on Isla Cristina's Playa Central, founded in 1956 by Rufino Zaiño and run by his son and grandson, known for its tonteo of eight fish dishes and almadraba tuna.
About Casa Rufino, Isla Cristina
Rufino Zaiño founded the restaurant in 1956 on the Avenida de la Playa, facing Playa Central, and built a long menu of Huelva coast fish and shellfish. His son José Antonio now directs it with his wife Ana Rodríguez Castillo front of house, and grandson Jesús Zaiño leads the kitchen. The dining rooms keep much of their original look, and the restaurant hosts dinners for Isla Cristina's tuna week each September.
The house classic is the tonteo, a tasting menu for four of eight fish dishes, each with its own sauce, served long before tasting menus were fashionable. Bluefin tuna from the almadraba, the ancient trap fishery, appears as smoked ventresca (belly), sashimi, roasted tarantelo and pellejito, a local stew of tuna skin with tomato. Fried fish, coquinas and prawns complete the list, with Condado de Huelva wines.
Open Tuesday to Sunday for lunch, 13:45–16:00, and in July and August also for dinner, 20:30–22:30. Expect about €50 per person without drinks (2025). Book online or on +34 959 330 810, essential in summer. There is free parking, a terrace and air conditioning. It suits a long seafood lunch after the beach.
Book the tonteo for four and allow two hours. Late spring and early summer bring fresh almadraba tuna; September is tuna week. Lunch starts late here, so arrive at 14:00–14:30 like the locals.
