Casa Joaquín, Almería
Five-table seafood tavern at the port end of Calle Real, run by the same family since 1918, with no printed menu and Almería's best red prawns from the market.
About Casa Joaquín, Almería
The family business began in 1918, when Joaquín's grandfather opened the Café Miramar facing the sea. It was wrecked in the German naval bombardment of Almería in May 1937, and the family moved to the end of Calle Real, where Joaquín's father built its name on top-quality seafood. Joaquín has run it since 1993, with his sister cooking their mother Encarna's recipes. In 2019 the Academia Andaluza de Gastronomía honoured its career, and Guía Repsol lists it as a reference for produce.
There is no carta; dishes are recited depending on the market. Expect gamba roja (red prawns from off Cabo de Gata) a la plancha, quisquillas (small shrimp), calamar de potera, jibia (cuttlefish) en su tinta, hígado de rape encebollado (monkfish liver with onions), rape in almond sauce, fried fish, tomate aliñado, ham cut by hand and huevas de mújol. Good wines and spirits complete it.
Lunch is from 13:30, Monday to Saturday, and dinner from about 20:30 on weekdays; it closes on Saturday evenings and Sundays (confirm by phone). A caña costs about €3.20 (2026), but seafood is priced by weight and the bill runs to about €50–80 per person. Ask prices before ordering prawns. Booking by phone is advised for the five tables; the bar is walk-in.
Lunch is the main service; arrive at 13:30. Tip: let Joaquín guide you, but agree a budget first.
