Metropolitana de Almería
Metropolitana de Almería offers a practical gateway to southern Spain’s rich history and coastal beauty.
Why visit Metropolitana de Almería
Metropolitana de Almería gathers the provincial capital and the towns of the lower Andarax valley, stretching east to the wild coastline of Níjar. It is the most urban corner of the province, yet within half an hour of the city centre the landscape turns to dry ravines, citrus groves along the riverbed and the bare slopes of the Sierra Alhamilla. The capital itself has a lively, unpretentious character, with a busy port, a shaded Paseo de Almería and bars that still serve a free tapa with every drink. With an airport, beaches and protected coast so close together, it suits travellers who want a practical base with plenty to see.
Main attractions in Metropolitana de Almería
In the city, the Alcazaba and its later Christian castle crown the hill above the old quarter, while the fortress-like cathedral, the Refugios de la Guerra Civil air-raid tunnels and the Museo de Almería trace the area’s long history. Further back in time, Los Millares near Santa Fe de Mondújar is one of the most important Copper Age settlements in Europe. Níjar’s share of Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park brings volcanic coves such as Los Genoveses and Mónsul, the fishing village of San José and good snorkelling, kayaking and coastal walking, and the old town of Níjar sells hand-painted pottery and jarapa rugs. Pechina has historic thermal baths in the Sierra Alhamilla. Expect grilled fish, gurullos and tomatoes from the Andarax market gardens, and the Feria de Almería in late August.
