Levante Almeriense
Levante Almeriense offers a blend of coastal allure and agricultural tradition that appeals to travelers and expats alike.
Why visit Levante Almeriense
Levante Almeriense is the north-eastern corner of Almería, where the province meets Murcia and the Mediterranean coast turns north. The coastline mixes long sandy beaches at Vera and Mojácar Playa with rocky coves near Carboneras, while inland the Sierra Cabrera and Sierra de Bédar rise behind dry plains and old mining country. Fishing ports like Garrucha, hilltop villages and traditional cave houses sit close to modern resorts and golf courses, giving the area a relaxed, lived-in feel. The warm, dry climate brings sunshine most of the year, so it suits beach holidays, winter escapes and travellers who like to mix the coast with prehistory and village life.
Main attractions in Levante Almeriense
Mojácar’s white houses tumble down a hill a short drive from its beaches, and the town’s Moros y Cristianos festival in June fills its streets. In Pulpí, the Geoda de Pulpí, a giant crystal-lined cavity inside an old mine, can be visited on guided tours, while Cuevas del Almanzora has a castle with museums and cave dwellings carved into the hillsides. Antas is home to El Argar, the site that gave its name to a Bronze Age culture of south-eastern Spain. Carboneras sits at the northern end of Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, near the wild Playa de los Muertos, with good snorkelling, diving and coastal walks. Golf courses, sailing and windsurfing complete the outdoor options, and Garrucha’s harbour is famous for its red prawns, best enjoyed with grilled fish in its seafront bars.
