About El Toyo Public Golf School

The Escuela Pública de Golf El Toyo is a public golf academy in the El Toyo urbanisation, about 13 km east of Almería city on the edge of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. Run by the Junta de Andalucía, it opened in 2017 as the third of the regional government's public academies, after La Cartuja in Seville and La Garza in Linares, all meant to open golf to a wider public.

It is a practice and teaching centre rather than a course. The driving range is 250 metres long and 100 metres wide, with 30 hitting bays, and there is a putting green and a chipping green with three bunkers. Courses are run for children and adults, alongside private lessons, and the building has changing rooms, a classroom, a cafeteria with a terrace, four padel courts and a car park.

There are no holes to play here; the nearest course is Alborán Golf next door. Fees are set low, with a small daily access charge, buckets of balls and cheap club hire.

October to May is the best season, dry and warm without summer's heat. From June to September, come early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the midday sun.

When you are ready for a full round, Alborán Golf (300 m) is next door: an 18-hole, par-72 course that hosted the golf at the 2005 Mediterranean Games. To the east, Playa de Cabo de Gata (11 km) is a long, straight beach beside the salt pans, where flamingos feed. Heading west towards the city, Almería's urban seafront leads to Playa del Zapillo (12 km), the main city beach with its promenade, and Playa de San Miguel (12 km), close to the old town. A morning at the range leaves the afternoon free for the coast.
