Mercado Central de Atarazanas
Málaga's central market hall, built in iron and stone by Joaquín de Rucoba in 1876–1879 behind a 14th-century Nasrid gateway that once led into the city's Moorish shipyard.
About Mercado Central de Atarazanas
The Mercado Central de Atarazanas occupies the site of a Nasrid shipyard (atarazana) that once stood on Málaga's shoreline. Its marble horseshoe gateway, carved with shields of Muhammad V (1354–1391), is the only Moorish survivor and is a Bien de Interés Cultural. Joaquín de Rucoba built the three-aisled iron market behind it in 1876–1879; a restoration in 2008–2010 renewed the stalls and roof.
Fish fills the central aisle: boquerones, sardines, prawns, clams, coquinas and sea snails. Butchers sell Iberian ham and chorizo, and other stalls are piled with olives, nuts, dried fruit and spices. The rear window, 108 stained-glass panels made by the Atienza brothers in 1973, shows the city's monuments. Counter bars serve fried fish, grilled prawns and clams, with tables outside.
Open Monday to Saturday 08:00–15:00, closed Sundays and public holidays; the bars keep similar hours. It is ten minutes' walk from the cathedral, and buses 2 and 10 stop outside. Allow an hour. It suits food lovers, families and anyone cooking in a holiday flat.
Weekday mornings before 11:00 are best for the fish counters; Saturday late morning is busiest. Signs ask visitors not to touch produce, to keep aisles clear and to ask before photographing stalls. Carry small change; the council's free refrigerated lockers let you keep sightseeing after shopping.
