Mercado Victoria
Mercado Victoria is a gastronomic market in Córdoba's Jardines de la Victoria, set in the cast-iron fair pavilion that the Círculo de la Amistad club put up in 1877.
About Mercado Victoria
Mercado Victoria occupies the Caseta del Círculo de la Amistad, the pavilion that the city's leading social club built in 1877 for the Córdoba Fair, held in these gardens until 1994. Its ironwork came from the La Catalana foundry in Seville, and a pseudo-Mudéjar brick annex by Adolfo Castiñeyra followed in 1918. It opened in 2013 as Andalucía's first permanent gastronomic market.
Its 18 stalls cook to eat on the spot at shared tables under the iron roof. Córdoba classics come first: salmorejo, flamenquines, croquetas and Iberian ham. Others offer grilled meat, octopus and rice, fried fish and seafood, oysters with cava, and Italian, Japanese, Argentine, Mexican and Arab-Andalusian food, plus a wine counter, a beer bar and a café.
The café opens at 09:00; food stalls serve daily from 12:00 until 00:30, or 02:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and the eves of holidays, with kitchens closing 30 minutes earlier. Entry is free and you pay at each stall. It is 10 minutes' walk west of the Mezquita via the Puerta de Almodóvar, and suits groups and families who cannot agree on one restaurant.
Weekday lunchtimes tend to be calmest; Friday and Saturday nights are full and loud, and the outdoor terraces are the best seats. Share dishes from several stalls, and check the price boards, which run above neighbourhood taverns.

Nearby places to visit
Mercado Victoria stands in the Jardines de la Victoria on the western edge of the old town. Through the Puerta de Almodóvar the Judería begins: the Al-Iksir Alchemy Museum (450 m), the Córdoba Synagogue (500 m) and the Bullfighting Museum of Córdoba (550 m) are a few minutes' walk away, and the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (650 m) lies just beyond. To the south, the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos (800 m) has terraced gardens with long pools. For a market of a different kind, the Mercado de la Corredera (950 m) sells fresh fish and produce in a 16th-century building on the Plaza de la Corredera.
