Zuheros Climbing
One of Córdoba's oldest sport-climbing schools: ten limestone sectors around Zuheros and the Bailón gorge, grades 5 to 8b+, plus a K2 vía ferrata, inside the Sierras Subbéticas park.
About Zuheros Climbing
Zuheros, a white village on a limestone outcrop in the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, has one of Córdoba's oldest climbing schools. In 2022 the council and local climbers published free topos for ten sectors, and the park regulates climbing under a 2022 plan, backed in 2026 by signposting and a leaflet. Bolting new routes is forbidden.
The sectors ring the village and the mouth of the Bailón gorge. Castillo, below the castle, has grades 4 to 8a+, mostly in the 7th grade; Placa de Control, Las Cruces, Tajo de la Cruz and Las Zorreras can be climbed all year; Cueva de la Paría, El Mirador, Placa de los 6C, Cueva del Fraile and the Tajos del Tembladero are seasonal. Overall grades run from 5 to 8b+ on grey slabs, vertical walls and steep caves, and a short K2 vía ferrata climbs about 130 m up the gorge side.
Climbing is banned on Castillo from 1 March to 14 July and on the other restricted sectors from 1 January to 14 July; outside those dates, notify the park two working days ahead. Open sectors are free. The vía ferrata is allowed from 15 July to 8 January with council authorisation; Alúa guides it for €45 per person (minimum age 14). Much of the rock is private farmland.
October to April is the main season, as many walls face south. Bring a 70 m rope, 14 quickdraws, a helmet and water, and download the council's topo PDF beforehand, as signal in the gorge is patchy.

The sectors start next to the Cañón del Río Bailón trail and below the castle of Zuheros (under 1 km), whose cheese shops and terraces make a good rest-day base. Up the mountain road, the Cueva de los Murciélagos de Zuheros (1 km) is a show cave with Neolithic finds and rock art. Below the village runs the Vía Verde de la Subbética (3 km), a flat ride along the old oil railway, and Luque (4 km) has its own regulated crags. In Baena, the Almazara Núñez de Prado (9 km) offers tours of a traditional olive-oil mill.
