Almazara Núñez de Prado

Family olive mill in Baena, one of the oldest still working in the Mediterranean, with granite roller stones from 1944, a 1795 tinaja cellar and organic oil since 1989.

About Almazara Núñez de Prado

The Núñez de Prado family came to Baena from La Rioja in 1795 and turned to olives after phylloxera ruined their vines. The seventh generation farms about 700 hectares with some 94,000 trees, including Arbequina, Picual and Picuda, under the DOP Baena, certified organic since 1989. The mill, completed in 1944 in a traditional farmhouse in town, is regarded as one of the oldest still working in the Mediterranean.

Olives are crushed by four conical granite rollers; in thermo-filters the Flor de Aceite drips out by gravity alone, more than 11 kg of olives per litre, before the paste is cold-pressed at up to 400 bar and the oil settles in tiled tanks. You also see the late 18th-century cellar of half-buried tinajas and the room where bottles are labelled by hand.

Mill visits are free and arranged in advance by phone (957 670 141) or email; the shop opens on weekday mornings, roughly 09:00–15:00. Tastings led by members of the DOP Baena panel and a grove visit (€6) are for groups of 20 or more. The mill is a short walk from Baena's centre, with street parking; Córdoba is an hour by car.

Come from November to January to see the stones turning and taste new oil. Flor de Aceite in a porcelain bottle makes a good present. Tip: call a day or two ahead so someone is free to show you round.
