Pulpí Geode

The Pulpí Geode is a giant cavity lined with transparent gypsum crystals up to 2 metres long, 50 metres underground in the Mina Rica, an old mine at Pilar de Jaravía near Pulpí.

About Pulpí Geode

The Pulpí Geode lies in the Mina Rica, on the Sierra del Aguilón at Pilar de Jaravía, about 3 km from the coast. Members of the Grupo Mineralogista de Madrid found it in December 1999. The cavity is about 8 m long, 1.8 m wide and 1.7 m high, a volume of 10.7 m³, lined with selenite gypsum crystals up to 2 m long that grew between about 164,000 and 60,000 years ago.

The visit starts in galleries worked in the 19th century for iron, lead and silver, where the guide explains the mining history and points out faults and small geodes. After 164 steps down to about 50 m below ground, you look into the geode through an opening; the crystals are clear enough to see the wall behind. It became a Natural Monument in 2022.

All visits are guided, in groups of up to 14, and last about 2 hours; arrive 30 minutes early. Tours are in Spanish, with €3 audio guides in English, French, German and Dutch. The minimum age is 8. Wear trainers or boots; helmets are provided. The steps make the visit unsuitable for wheelchairs or anyone with limited mobility.

Open all year, the geode is a good choice for a cloudy or very hot day on the coast. Book on the official website well ahead, as summer and holiday slots sell out.
