Bodegas Quitapenas

Family bodega founded in 1880 and the only winery within Málaga city, making DO Málaga sweet wines and Sierras de Málaga dry wines, with weekday tours and tastings from €15.

About Bodegas Quitapenas

Francisco Suárez Pineda, who left Cútar in the Axarquía after phylloxera, opened an eating house in El Palo in 1880; farmers called it the house of the man who takes their troubles away, hence Quitapenas. Five generations on, the family bodega in Guadalmar makes DO Málaga and Sierras de Málaga wines: sweet Málaga, Pedro Ximénez and muscatel, dry, sparkling and organic wines and a PX vermouth.

The standard tour visits the Salón Viñeros and the Salón de Crianza, where old presses and tools show how Málaga wine making has changed, and ends with three wines among the barrels. Longer options add cheese, Iberian ham or tapas, and Copa en Mano pours four wines from casks aged over 30 years. Groups can blend their own wine. Buy the Málaga Dulce or Pajarete.

Tours run Monday to Friday at 12:00 for about an hour. Prices in 2026: €15 with three wines (minimum six), €20 with cheese, €27 with ham, €35 with tapas, €60 for Copa en Mano (six to ten people). Book online; free cancellation up to 48 hours. Tours are in Spanish, adapted for reduced mobility, with free parking. Come by taxi rather than drive after tasting.

Evening tastings are held from time to time, such as a four-wine Pedro Ximénez session on 20 November 2026 (€29). The Málaga harvest runs from August to September. Tip: the family's taverns in the city centre pour the same wines by the glass at weekends.

The bodega is on the south-west edge of Málaga, close to the airport and the mouth of the Guadalhorce. Central Málaga is 7 km away: the Málaga Cathedral and the Mercado Central de Atarazanas, where the city's fish and produce stalls are housed in a 19th-century iron hall, are both about 7 km. Along the coast, Playa Bajondillo in Torremolinos is 5 km and the Crocodile Park Torremolinos is 6 km. The Sea Museum Alborania, on the Muelle Uno quay, is 7 km and pairs well with an evening glass of sweet Málaga wine in the old town.
