Arcos de la Frontera
Arcos de la Frontera is a white hill town at the western gate of the Sierra de Cádiz, its old quarter strung along a sandstone crag above the Guadalete, taken by Alfonso X in 1255.
About Arcos de la Frontera
Arcos runs along a narrow ridge whose southern cliff, the Peña, drops sheer to the Guadalete. Moorish Arkos was the seat of an 11th-century taifa; Alfonso X took it in 1255 and again in 1264, and it stayed a frontier town, hence its surname. The old quarter was declared a historic-artistic site in 1962. Arcos has about 31,000 inhabitants, but the quarter on the crag is compact.
Plaza del Cabildo, with the town hall and parador, ends at the Mirador de la Peña Nueva above the cliff. The Basilica of Santa María, built over the mosque from the 14th century, has a late Gothic west front and a Renaissance altarpiece (€4 with the tower). At the eastern end the church of San Pedro stands on the cliff edge. The castle is private.
Arcos is 35 km (35 minutes) from Jerez, 65 km (1 hour) from Cádiz and 114 km (1 hour 30 minutes) from Seville; buses link it with Jerez and Cádiz. Do not drive into the old quarter, whose one-way lanes are very narrow: park in the lower town and walk up the steep, cobbled streets. Allow half a day. It suits history lovers and photographers.
Visit in spring or autumn; summer afternoons are fierce. Holy Week processions fill the lanes, the Toro del Aleluya runs on Easter Sunday and December brings a living nativity, the Belén Viviente. Look for campiña dishes such as tagarninas, wild thistles, and convent biscuits. Tip: be on the Plaza del Cabildo balcony at sunset, when kestrels wheel below.
