Los Millares

Los Millares, near Santa Fe de Mondújar, is a landmark of the European Copper Age: a settlement of 3200–2200 BC with concentric walls, 13 small forts and about 80 collective tombs.

About Los Millares

Los Millares sits on a plateau between the Andarax and the Rambla de Huéchar, 20 km from the sea. Occupied from about 3200 to 2200 BC, it had three concentric walls and an inner citadel, with 13 forts on nearby hills. Its people farmed, herded and worked copper. The necropolis of about 80 tombs covers some 13 hectares, and in 2022 the Spanish Congress backed a bid for World Heritage status.

The visit starts at the reception centre, with displays and an audiovisual. A path crosses the necropolis, lined with collective tombs, most with a round chamber 3–6 metres across reached by a passage, then passes the walls and the barbican of the main gate. The interpretation area has full-size copies of walls, huts, a copper workshop and two domed tombs.

Entry is free; groups must book on 677 903 404. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00–14:00 (last entry 13:30). The full visit takes 2.5–3 hours over open, uneven ground; the centre and interpretation area alone take 1.5 hours and suit small children and visitors with limited mobility. It is on the AL-3411, 20 km north-west of Almería; you need a car.

Come in spring or autumn and arrive at opening time, as there is almost no shade. Bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes. The Junta holds special visits at the equinoxes, when the sunrise lines up with some tomb entrances.
