Córdoba Synagogue
Córdoba Synagogue, completed in 1314–1315 in the Jewish quarter, is a small Mudéjar prayer hall of under 40 m², its walls covered in carved plasterwork and Hebrew verses from the Psalms.
About Córdoba Synagogue
The synagogue on Calle Judíos is dated to 1314–1315 by its foundation inscription, found in 1884, which names its builder as Isaac Moheb, son of Efraim. It was used until the Catholic Monarchs expelled the Jews in 1492, then changed hands until it was rediscovered in 1876. Declared a national monument in 1885 and acquired in 1916, it is the only medieval synagogue preserved in the city.
A small courtyard and vestibule lead into the square prayer hall. The walls carry carved plaster with star patterns, plant motifs and Hebrew inscriptions from the Psalms, once painted blue, red and black. The east wall holds the vaulted niche for the Torah scrolls, the west wall a lobed arch probably for the reading platform, and high on the south wall is the women's gallery with three small balconies.
Entry is free with no booking for individuals; groups of more than six must book on the Junta's ARES portal. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 15:00, with last entry 10 minutes before closing, and closes on Mondays except before holidays. The prayer hall is on one level, though tight when busy. Allow 15–20 minutes; it suits all ages.
Walking tours fill it mid-morning, so come at 09:00 or after 13:00. Combine it with a stroll along Calle Judíos to the Puerta de Almodóvar and the statue of Maimonides in Plaza de Tiberíades.
