Sacra Capilla del Salvador
The Sacra Capilla del Salvador in Úbeda is a Renaissance funerary chapel built in 1536–1559 for Francisco de los Cobos, secretary to Emperor Charles V, on Plaza Vázquez de Molina.
About Sacra Capilla del Salvador
Francisco de los Cobos, the most powerful official at the court of Charles V, commissioned the chapel in 1536 as a family pantheon beside his palace. Diego de Siloé drew the plans and Andrés de Vandelvira directed the work from 1540; it was consecrated in 1559. Part of the Úbeda and Baeza World Heritage Site since 2003, it still belongs to the Fundación Casa Ducal de Medinaceli.
The façade, carved by Esteban Jamete, shows the Transfiguration above the portal. Inside, a single nave and a monumental grille lead to a domed rotunda whose altarpiece holds Alonso Berruguete's Transfiguration, damaged in 1936. Vandelvira's sacristy, with Jamete's caryatids and sibyls, is one of the richest Renaissance interiors in Spain.
