About Desert Springs Golf Club

Desert Springs Golf Club lies on the road between Las Cunas and Palomares in the municipality of Cuevas del Almanzora, in the Levante Almeriense, a few kilometres inland from the coast at Vera. Opened in 2001 as the centrepiece of a residential resort, it was promoted as the first desert-style golf course in Europe.

The Indiana course was designed by Peter McEvoy, a former Walker Cup captain, and modelled on the desert courses of Arizona and California. It uses far less grass than a typical Spanish layout: the fairways are framed by stony rough, dry riverbeds, sandstone outcrops and thousands of cacti, with springs and water hazards on several holes, including a gully and stream on the 7th and a lake behind the 18th green. The ground in the rough is hard and stony, so some regulars carry an old iron for recovery shots.

The resort has a golf academy with good practice facilities, buggy and club hire, a restaurant and bar, and apartments and villas to rent; book tee times ahead.

Come between October and April, when daytime temperatures in this dry corner of Almería are mild. In summer, take the first tee time of the day and carry plenty of water, as there is little shade.

Nearby places to visit

The coast is only a few minutes' drive away. Playa de Quitapellejos (4 km) is the nearest beach, on the Cuevas del Almanzora shoreline, and El Playazo (4 km) and Playa de Puerto Rey (6 km) continue south along the long sandy coast of Vera. For a second round, Valle del Este Golf (8 km) in Vera has its own four-star hotel and is often combined with Desert Springs in golf packages. Further south, Club Marina Golf Mojácar (11 km) lies near the coast below the white hill town of Mojácar. All are within an easy drive.
