About Playa de Puerto Rey

Playa de Puerto Rey, sometimes written Puerto del Rey, is a long urban beach on the coast of Vera, in Almería's Levante. It runs in front of the quiet Puerto Rey residential area, close to the mouth of the Río Antas, with the fishing town of Garrucha and its harbour a short drive to the south. The AL-7107 coast road gives easy access by car.

It is about 2,300 metres long and around 130 metres wide, with dark sand and moderate waves. It is well equipped, with beach surveillance in season, toilets, showers and footbaths, step-free access, and hire of sunbeds, umbrellas and small craft. A local club runs a sailing school and a kayaking centre.

What sets it apart is the mouth of the Antas just along the shore. There is a small lagoon there where migratory birds travelling between Europe and Africa stop to rest, and the walk from the beach to see them is the best reason to come out of season.

June and September give warm water and more space than July and August. Come early in the morning or in the hour before sunset, when the sand is cooler and the lagoon is quiet.

Nearby places to visit

North along the coast, El Playazo (3 km) continues Vera's long run of sand. Beyond it, Playa de Quitapellejos (4 km) is the beach of Palomares, where the minister Manuel Fraga famously swam in 1966 to show the sea was safe after the Palomares nuclear accident. This corner of Almería is also good for golf. Inland, Desert Springs Golf Club (6 km) was promoted as Europe's first desert-style course. Club Marina Golf Mojácar (6 km) lies south beyond Garrucha with sea views from most holes, and Valle del Este Golf (7 km) is an 18-hole desert-style course on the edge of Vera.
