Vélez-Málaga
The historic capital of the Axarquía, with a Moorish fortress above the old town and the beaches of Torre del Mar below.
Why visit Vélez-Málaga
Vélez-Málaga is the main town of the Axarquía, the hilly eastern corner of Málaga province. Its old town climbs to a Moorish fortress, and its churches and palaces recall its importance as a market town for sugar, raisins and wine. Today the countryside around it grows avocados and mangoes, and its coast at Torre del Mar has a long promenade and beaches. Vélez-Málaga suits travellers who want a real Andalusian town with a beach on its doorstep and easy access to the Axarquía's white villages.
What to see and do in Vélez-Málaga
Climb to the Fortaleza, the restored Moorish fortress, for views over the town, the coast and the mountains. The church of Santa María la Mayor, built on the site of the main mosque, and the old quarter around it are worth a wander, and the MVVEL museum tells the town's history. Holy Week processions here are among the most important in the province. On the coast, Torre del Mar has a long beach and promenade, with Playa de Lagos and Caleta de Vélez nearby. Golfers have Baviera Golf, and families the Aquavelis water park. The Mudéjar route through Árchez and Salares, and the wine villages of Cómpeta and Sayalonga, are short drives inland.
A day in Vélez-Málaga
Start at the Fortaleza for views over the town and the coast, then walk down through the old quarter to Santa María la Mayor and the MVVEL museum. After lunch, drive to Torre del Mar and spend the afternoon on the beach and promenade. In the evening, eat fried fish by the sea, or head inland to the wine village of Cómpeta for dinner with a view of the mountains.
Food and local life
The Axarquía's tropical fruit, especially mangoes and avocados, is grown all around, along with Moscatel grapes for raisins and sweet wine. Torre del Mar is known for fried fish and espetos on the beach.
Around Vélez-Málaga
Vélez-Málaga is the capital of the Axarquía comarca, a hilly region of thirty towns between Málaga and the Granada border. Inland, the Mudéjar route links brick church towers in Árchez and Salares, Cómpeta and Sayalonga grow Moscatel grapes for sweet wine, and Comares crowns a hilltop with views over the whole region. On the coast, Nerja and Torrox are within 20 minutes, and La Viñuela reservoir offers calm water for paddling and picnics.
