About Baviera Golf

Baviera Golf is an 18-hole, par-71 course at Caleta de Vélez, in the municipality of Vélez-Málaga on the eastern Costa del Sol, about 500 metres from the sea. It was designed by José María Cañizares, the former Ryder Cup player; the first nine holes opened in 2000 and the second nine in 2004.

The course is flat, with no climbs or drops, and its fairways are forgiving at 80 to 90 metres wide. The challenge lies in the greens, which average around 700 square metres and are full of slopes and swales. Four lakes on the front nine affect the 3rd, 4th and 5th holes, and the signature hole is the 4th, a 500-metre par five where two lakes come into play. The full course measures 6,104 metres.

The clubhouse, opened in November 2008, has a restaurant with a terrace looking out to sea, a pro shop and underground parking for 200 cars, and its gardens are used for weddings. Many of the players are British, German and Nordic visitors who winter in nearby villages such as Cómpeta, Frigiliana and Torrox.

The Axarquía is mild from November to April, the best season to play. In summer, take an early tee time and finish before the midday heat.

Baviera is minutes from the sea. Playa de la Caleta de Vélez (1 km) lies beside Caleta's fishing harbour, and Playa de Torre del Mar (3 km) is the long promenade beach of Vélez-Málaga's main resort. Inland, the MVVEL Museum of Vélez-Málaga (4 km) is the town's city museum, open from Tuesday to Sunday. East along the coast, Playa de Lagos (5 km) is a quieter stretch on the way towards Nerja. For a second round, Añoreta Resort & Golf (16 km), at Rincón de la Victoria, was Cañizares's first design and makes a natural pairing with this course. Both are just off the A-7.
