Frigiliana
One of Andalucía's prettiest white villages, a maze of Moorish lanes on a hillside above Nerja.
Why visit Frigiliana
Frigiliana is regularly named among the most beautiful villages in Spain. Its Moorish quarter is a tangle of steep, whitewashed lanes and stairways decorated with flowerpots and coloured doors, and the views stretch down to the sea. The village sits at the edge of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, just 6 km from Nerja. Frigiliana suits photographers, walkers and anyone wanting a short, rewarding visit from the coast.
What to see and do in Frigiliana
Wander the Barrio Mudéjar and look for the tiled plaques that tell the story of the 1569 Morisco rebellion and the battle fought on the hill above the village. The church of San Antonio and the old sugar mill, now a factory making sugar cane honey, are worth a look. In August, the Festival of the Three Cultures celebrates the village's Christian, Muslim and Jewish heritage. Trails lead into the natural park, including routes along the river Higuerón. Day trips from Málaga combine Frigiliana with Nerja and its caves.
A day in Frigiliana
Arrive in the morning before the day-trippers and wander the Moorish quarter, reading the tiled plaques about the 1569 rebellion. Visit the old sugar mill and buy a jar of sugar cane honey, then have lunch on a terrace with views to the sea. In the afternoon, walk a section of the river Higuerón trail into the natural park, or drive down to Nerja for the caves and the Balcón de Europa.
Food and local life
Try the local sugar cane honey, sweet Moscatel wine from the Axarquía and pastries from the village bakeries. Bars serve tapas and local dishes such as migas and fried fish. Several bars along the main street have terraces with views to the sea.
Around Frigiliana
Frigiliana is in the Axarquía comarca. Nerja and its caves are 10 minutes away, the wine villages of Cómpeta and Sayalonga lie further along the mountain road, and the Mudéjar towers of Árchez and Salares are within half an hour. The peaks of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, including La Maroma, rise behind the village. In August, Cómpeta's wine festival, the Noche del Vino, makes a lively evening out from Frigiliana, with music, dancing and free Moscatel.
See every town and village on the Axarquía page.
Getting there and around
Frigiliana is in the Axarquía comarca, about 1 hour from Málaga airport by car and 10 minutes from Nerja. Buses run from Nerja. The village is steep; wear comfortable shoes. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is busy at midday.
