Arcos de la Frontera
A white town perched on a sheer cliff above the Guadalete, the classic start of the White Villages Route.
Why visit Arcos de la Frontera
Arcos de la Frontera rises along a narrow limestone ridge that ends in a sheer drop to the river Guadalete, and its old town of steep lanes, churches and palaces looks out over the plain towards Jerez. The 'de la Frontera' in its name recalls the centuries when it stood on the shifting border between Christian and Moorish kingdoms. Arcos is the western gateway to the Sierra de Cádiz and the white villages, and many visitors start their route here. It suits photographers, history lovers and anyone touring the pueblos blancos by car.
What to see and do in Arcos de la Frontera
The Plaza del Cabildo is the heart of the old town, with the basilica of Santa María, the ducal castle, which is privately owned, and a balcony viewpoint over the cliff where kestrels and swifts swoop below your feet. Wander the lanes to the church of San Pedro, which also sits on the cliff edge, and look for the small convents that sell sweets. The Parador occupies a former palace on the square. Around town, Bodega Huerta de Albalá produces wines under the Cádiz hills and offers visits, and Arcos Gardens has a golf course. On Easter Sunday, the town runs the Toro del Aleluya through its streets. From here, the White Villages Route continues to Bornos, El Bosque, Ubrique and Grazalema.
A day in Arcos de la Frontera
Arrive early to walk the old town, starting at the Plaza del Cabildo and the basilica of Santa María. After lunch, visit San Pedro church and the cliff-edge viewpoints. In the afternoon, tour Bodega Huerta de Albalá or continue along the White Villages Route to Bornos and El Bosque.
Food and local life
Look for game stews, sopa de tomate, chicharrones and local cheeses, plus pastries from the convents. Arcos is close enough to Jerez for a glass of fino, and the hill wines of the Sierra de Cádiz are worth trying.

Getting there and around
Arcos is in the Sierra de Cádiz comarca, about 30 minutes by car from Jerez and its airport and 1 hour 15 minutes from Seville. Buses link with Jerez, Cádiz and Seville. The old town lanes are steep and narrow; park below and walk up. Spring and autumn are ideal, and Holy Week is especially atmospheric.
