San Fernando

A naval town on the Bay of Cádiz, birthplace of flamenco singer Camarón, with salt marshes and the wild Camposoto beach.

Why visit San Fernando

San Fernando, known locally as La Isla, sits on an island of salt marshes between Cádiz and the mainland. It has long been a Spanish Navy town, and in 1810 the Cortes, Spain's first modern parliament, met here while Napoleon's troops besieged the area. It is also the birthplace of Camarón de la Isla, one of the greatest flamenco singers of all time. San Fernando feels local and unhurried, with good beaches and the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park on its doorstep. It suits flamenco fans, birdwatchers and travellers looking for an authentic base close to Cádiz.

What to see and do in San Fernando

The Camarón Museum tells the singer's life through photos, recordings and personal objects, and his statue and grave are places of pilgrimage for fans. The Real Teatro de las Cortes recalls the 1810 parliament, and the Royal Naval Observatory, founded in the eighteenth century, offers guided visits. The beach at Camposoto is one of the wildest near Cádiz, with dunes and a protected spit at Punta del Boquerón, while La Casería and Urrutia face the inner bay. The salt marshes of the natural park can be explored on walking and cycling trails or by kayak, with flamingos, spoonbills and waders.

A day in San Fernando

Visit the Camarón Museum in the morning and walk the main street to the Real Teatro de las Cortes. After lunch, cycle or walk the salt-marsh trails, then head to Camposoto beach for the late afternoon. Finish with an evening at a flamenco peña.

Food and local life

Fish from the marshes, known as pescado de estero, is a local speciality, along with shrimp, fried fish and tortillitas de camarones. Look for traditional ventas on the salt flats, and flamenco peñas where locals gather to sing.
