Istán
Istán is a white village of Moorish layout on a ridge above the Río Verde, 15 km inland from Marbella, where Morisco irrigation channels still run through the streets past a church of 1505.
About Istán
Istán stands at about 290 metres on a spur between the Río Verde and the Río Molinos, with the Concepción reservoir winding below. A Moorish farming village, it kept its Muslim population after 1485, and in 1568–69 its Moriscos rose in revolt, burning the church and attacking the fortified house of the priest Escalante. About 1,700 people live here, inside the Sierra de las Nieves.
The streets follow a Moorish plan, with acequias, irrigation channels once shared out by an alcalde de aguas, running beside the lanes. The Fuente del Chorro has seven spouts and a washhouse fed by a small cascade, and the Museo del Agua explains the water system. The church of San Miguel was founded in 1505 and rebuilt after 1569. The Torre Escalante, a 15th-century fortified house, is a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Mirador del Peñón looks over the valleys.
Istán is 15 km from Marbella, turning off near Puerto Banús (20 minutes) and about 70 km from Málaga airport (55 minutes). Park at the entrance to the village; the lanes are steep and narrow, with steps in places, so not suited to wheelchairs. Allow two hours, or a day with the river. It suits walkers.
Spring and autumn are best; in summer, walkers wade the Río Verde to the Charco del Canalón. The Feria de San Miguel is held around 29 September, and a food fair and Día de la Naranja celebrate local oranges. Try guiso de hinojos, migas and gachas fritas. Tip: bring water shoes for the river.

A signed path from the top of the village leads to the Río Verde and the Charco del Canalón, a pool between limestone walls popular for summer swims. North of Istán, the Castaño Santo is a chestnut tree about 800 years old, protected as a Natural Monument. Down at the coast, Playa Río Verde (10 km) and Playa Casablanca (9 km) are Marbella beaches at the mouth of the same river. Over the hills, Ojén (9 km) is the village of aguardiente, and the spa village of Tolox (12 km), on the far side of the Sierra de las Nieves, is reached by a long road round via Coín.
