Zuheros

Zuheros is a white village of about 600 people at 656 metres in Córdoba's Sierras Subbéticas, below a limestone cliff crowned by a castle founded by Moorish settlers in the 9th century.

About Zuheros

Zuheros sits at 656 metres on a ledge of the Sierra de Cabra, in the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park. Muslim settlers made the crag their base in the 9th century, and under the caliphate a small walled town with a mosque grew here. Fernando III took it in the early 1240s. It joined Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España in 2016 and has about 600 people.

The Castillo-Palacio grows out of the rock above Plaza de la Paz: a Moorish keep, its towers rebuilt in 1964, beside the shell of a late 15th-century Renaissance palace. The Casa Grande holds an archaeological museum, with Neolithic finds from the cave, and a folk museum; castle and both museums cost €4. The Mirador de la Villa looks down into the Bailón gorge.

Zuheros is 76 km south-east of Córdoba, just over an hour by car, and about 110 km from Granada; Carrera buses run from Córdoba. Park on the edge of the village, as the central lanes are narrow, steep and hard for wheelchairs. Allow two to three hours, plus two for the cave, 4 km uphill (€8, booking advised, 700 steps). It suits walkers, families with older children and food lovers.

Spring and autumn are best; summer afternoons are hot. The Fiesta del Queso fills the castle square in mid-September, and the feria follows the procession of the Virgen de los Remedios on 15 August. Try the cheeses of Quesería Los Balanchares, oil from the village mill and migas. The €11 Visita Cultural ticket covers everything.
