Vejer de la Frontera
Vejer de la Frontera is a white hill town above the Barbate valley near the Costa de la Luz, ringed by 15th-century walls with four gates and topped by a Moorish castle.
About Vejer de la Frontera
Vejer stands on a hill about 170 metres above the Barbate valley, a few kilometres from the Atlantic. The Moorish town grew up inside walls on the summit, and after the Castilian conquest it passed to the Guzmán family, later Dukes of Medina Sidonia. A Conjunto Histórico since 1976 and one of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España since 2014, Vejer has about 13,100 inhabitants.
The 15th-century walls keep four gates, including the Arco de la Segur and the Arco de Sancho IV. The castle, with a horseshoe gateway, opens at weekends. The Divino Salvador joins a 14th-century Gothic-Mudéjar east end to a later Gothic nave. Plaza de España has a tiled fountain and the buttressed Arco de las Monjas leads to a folk museum (€1).
Vejer is 62 km (50 minutes) from Cádiz, 74 km (1 hour) from Jerez and 162 km (about 2 hours) from Seville; buses link it with Cádiz. Use the council car parks round the old town and walk in. The lanes are narrow, steep and cobbled, so wheelchair access is limited. Allow half a day. It suits photographers, food lovers and beach holidaymakers.
Spring and autumn are ideal; in summer come early or late and spend the afternoon on the beach. On Easter Sunday the Toro Embolao runs through the streets, and the cobijada, the women's black hooded dress, appears at festivals. Try retinto beef and almadraba bluefin tuna from nearby Barbate. Tip: the three surviving windmills of San Miguel are the best sunset viewpoint.
