The Atlantic shore at the base of Cabo de Trafalgar lies in Barbate municipality, between Zahora to the north-west and Los Caños de Meca to the east. Some maps label the spot Playa de las Plumas, a name not used locally.

Cabo de Trafalgar is a low headland joined to the mainland by a sandy tombolo, now a protected Natural Monument, with a large lighthouse at its tip. It was off this cape, in October 1805, that the British fleet under Nelson defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets. The beaches either side of the cape are open and flat, with fine sand, dunes and some rocky reefs, while east towards Barbate the coast rises into the pine-topped cliffs of the Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park.

This is an exposed shore: when the easterly levante blows hard, sand is whipped across the beach. No facilities are confirmed on this stretch, so bring water and shade.

The best months are June and September, with fewer people than in August. Choose a calm day and come in the late afternoon, when the light over the cape is at its best.

The closest beach on the list is Los Caños de Meca (2 km), east of the cape. The rest are around 10 km away. To the south-east, Playa del Carmen (11 km) forms the urban seafront of Barbate, a fishing town known for its bluefin tuna. To the north-west, Playa Punta Lejos (10 km) marks the south-eastern end of the Conil de la Frontera seafront, and Playa de los Bateles (11 km) is Conil's wide town beach beside the old centre. The coast road links Conil, Zahora, Los Caños de Meca and Barbate.
