About Playa de los Bateles

Playa de los Bateles is the town beach of Conil de la Frontera, on the Costa de la Luz in Cádiz province, directly in front of the whitewashed old centre. It begins at the mouth of the Río Salado and runs for about 850 metres. At around 130 metres it is unusually wide, with fine golden sand and a moderate Atlantic swell.

A wide, palm-lined promenade runs behind it, and wooden walkways cross the sand to the water, so the beach is easy to reach from the town's hotels, bars and restaurants. The river mouth at the southern end is a popular spot for windsurfing, and surfers use the beach when there is a swell. The beach displays a Blue Flag.

Facilities are complete: lifeguards in season, sunbed and umbrella hire, showers, toilets, a tourist office point, a children's area and a surf zone. There is a car park, but in high summer it fills early, and it is often easier to walk down from the town.

June and September are the best months, with warm days and far fewer people than in August. On this exposed coast, aim for the morning before the wind picks up, and come back at sunset, when the low sun lights the long shore.

Nearby places to visit

Along the coast, Playa Punta Lejos (800 m) is the next beach. Golfers can head north-west towards Chiclana: Sancti Petri Hills Golf (9 km) is closest. Club de Golf Campano (10 km) and Golf La Estancia (11 km) are in the same area. To the south-east, towards Cabo de Trafalgar, Playa del Cabo de Trafalgar (11 km) is in Barbate municipality, on the more open coast beyond Zahora. Conil's old centre sits right behind the beach, so lunch in town is easy before you head out to the courses or the coast.
