Mercado de San Agustín, Granada
The Mercado de San Agustín is Granada's central food market, a copper-roofed hall planned for 59 stalls by architect Pedro Salmerón and opened in 1998 just north of the cathedral.
About Mercado de San Agustín, Granada
The market fills the Plaza de San Agustín, site of an Augustinian convent pulled down in 1837. The first covered market of 1881 was demolished in 1988, when a car park was dug beneath the square. The present hall by Pedro Salmerón, completed in 1998, measures 40 by 40 metres, with a copper-clad roof, skylights and a Sierra Elvira stone floor, and was planned for 59 stalls, 21 each for meat and fish.
Stalls sell fish, meat, chacinas, cheese, and fruit and vegetables from the Vega de Granada. In recent years food stalls have opened among them: Ultramarinos San Agustín pours vermouth and Granada wines by the glass and serves a tasting menu; Casa Julia offers salted fish and gildas; Varietas makes bocadillos; Materia Prima is known for fried fish.
The council lists stall hours of Monday to Saturday 09:00–14:00, with some stalls open on weekday afternoons; food stalls keep their own hours, some opening on Friday and Saturday evenings. Stalls close on Sundays. The cathedral and Gran Vía buses are two minutes away, with a car park under the square. It suits cooks with a holiday kitchen, foodies and families.
Come on a weekday morning before 11:00 for the fullest fish and meat counters; Friday and Saturday lunchtimes are liveliest at the food stalls. Bring cash, and ask ham counters to vacuum-pack sliced jamón.
