Vía Ferrata de La Escaleruela
Via ferrata beside the Escaleruela waterfall above Cazorla: 800 m of cable and 271 m of ascent at grade K3, with optional K4–K6 sections and a 40 m Tibetan bridge; access is booked.
About Vía Ferrata de La Escaleruela
Cazorla council built this via ferrata as part of its Cazorla Vertical project; it opened in 2021 beside the Camino de la Escaleruela, an old path with steps cut into the rock used by villagers to carry firewood. The walls are Jurassic limestone and dolomite in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, and the installation is certified to UNE-EN 16869:2018.
The main line is graded K3 and has four sectors: Las Chorreras y Los Estratos, El Diente, the airy traverse of El Diente B and Carcesa y Nido del Dron, which ends up a 70 m wall. Optional sections branch off and rejoin it: a K4 spiral ladder, a K5 roof, a K6 overhang and a 40 m Tibetan bridge with the K4 Paso de la Ardilla. There are about 800 m of cable and 271 m of ascent, from 1,124 m to 1,395 m; allow 3 hours on the cables plus 45 minutes down the old path.
Access is through a locked gate and must be booked: Aventura Cazorla lists unguided entry at €10 per person (2026) with your own harness, helmet and lanyard. Guided outings with equipment cost from €35 with Guías de Cazorla (minimum age 14). It has closed in spring for raptor nesting (15 March to 1 May in recent seasons), so check when booking. Avoid it in storms.
The best months are October to November and May to June; in summer start at 09:00, as the south- and west-facing walls heat up. Bring gloves and 1.5 litres of water, and add the sports sections only with experience.

The ferrata sits on the route of the Pico Gilillo Circular from Cazorla (2 km), the classic hike to the top of the sierra, which passes the same waterfall. Below, the town of Cazorla (2 km) and its Castillo de la Yedra (2 km), home to the museum of popular arts, make a good base with plenty of restaurants. The hilltop castle village of La Iruela (3 km) looks out across the olive groves, and deeper in the park the gorge of Cerrada del Utrero (6 km) is an easy walk beside the young Guadalquivir.
