La Iruela

La Iruela is a small white village at 938 metres just above Cazorla, Jaén, crowned by an Almohad-era castle on a needle of rock and the ruined 16th-century church of Santo Domingo.

About La Iruela

La Iruela hangs on the slope of the Sierra de Cazorla at 938 metres, 2 km above Cazorla. A Moorish farming hamlet, it was walled in the 11th century and its castle grew under the Almohads. Archbishop Rodrigo Ximénez de Rada took it around 1231, and it won independence from Cazorla in 1378. The municipality has about 1,800 people, many in outlying hamlets.

The castle sits on a limestone pinnacle: a small square keep on the summit, a lower enclosure with a large cistern and four towers, and a bent gateway. Inside its walls stand the ruins of Santo Domingo, built in the 16th century under Francisco de los Cobos, burnt by French troops in 1810. An open-air theatre in classical style lies between church and rock. Entry costs €1–2.

La Iruela is 2 km from Cazorla on the A-319, five minutes by car; Cazorla is 46 km from Úbeda and about 100 km from Jaén, with Alsa buses. Park at the foot of the village and climb the steep lanes to the castle, with steps at the top; it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. An hour is enough. Combine it with Cazorla or a natural park drive.

Spring and autumn suit the climb; in summer go early or late. The late-August fiestas of the Virgen de los Desamparados end with fireworks at the castle, and bonfires burn for San Antón on the night of 16–17 January. Try migas de harina, ajo-pan, roscos and local olive oil. The castle closes on Mondays and at midday.
