Barranco de Cacín Climbing

Sport-climbing gorge near Fondón in the Alpujarra Almeriense, rated Almería's best crag: about 175 bolted routes from 5a to 8c on limestone walls up to 50 m, 30 minutes' walk in.

About Barranco de Cacín Climbing

The Barranco de Cacín cuts into the northern slopes of the Sierra de Gádor above the Andarax valley, south of Fondón in the Alpujarra Almeriense. Its walls were developed over decades by local climbers, notably Emilio Ibáñez 'Toskajara', on private land. At about 900–1,000 m the gorge is much cooler than the coast, so climbing is possible most of the year.

theCrag lists about 175 routes in seven or eight sectors; other guides give 150–180. Grades run from 5a to 8c, half of them between 6b and 7b, on compact limestone, vertical to overhanging and technical, 15–35 m long and up to about 50 m. Sector Principal faces east, with shade from mid-afternoon. From the Fondón bypass a concrete ramp and dirt track lead 4.4 km to parking by the ruined Venta de Cacín, then a 30-minute walk up the dry gorge bed.

Access is free, but the gorge is on a private estate: park only at the usual spot, do not drive further or camp by the stone corral, and keep dogs off the crag, as livestock graze below. Stones can fall in strong wind, so wear a helmet. The channel below Tajo de la Mota carries irrigation water, not drinking water. Xplora Almería runs full-day climbing courses in the province for €55–70 per person (2026).

The best months are October to May; in summer climb early or late in the shade. The free 'Lienzos de piedra' topo by Emilio Ibáñez is the reference guide.
