About Club de Golf Almerimar

Golf Almerimar is the resort course of Almerimar, the marina development on the coast of El Ejido in western Almería. Gary Player and Ron Kirby designed it, and it opened in 1976, early in Player's second career as a course architect. Nine more holes were added in 2003, giving 27 in all, which the club combines into par-72 rounds of 18.

The ground is almost completely flat, so the challenge comes from the layout rather than the terrain: wide fairways with plenty of doglegs, white-sand bunkers guarding large, fast greens, and water in play on several holes. The best-known hole is the 12th, whose green sits on an island. The original 18 holes were completely renovated in 2005, and the newer nine on a tighter plot play a little shorter.

There is a golf school with a large practice area, putting and chipping greens, a clubhouse restaurant and a pro shop, and buggies and clubs can be hired. Visitors are welcome every day but should book ahead.

The club charges lower green fees from May to September, but summer here is hot, so take an early tee time. October to April brings the most pleasant golfing weather, and mornings are usually calmer before the afternoon breeze picks up.

The beach is right on the doorstep: Playa de Poniente (500 m) lies on the Almerimar seafront, close enough for a swim after the round. Heading east, Playa de Cerrillos (9 km) is a long, undeveloped beach in the Punta Entinas-Sabinar natural area. Further along the coast, Club de Golf Playa Serena (14 km) in Roquetas de Mar is a flat, lake-studded course that opened in 1979. Inland, La Envía Golf (22 km) in Vícar sits in a valley sheltered by mountains, with palms and cacti lining the holes. Westwards, Playa de la Sirena Loca (22 km) is on the coast at Adra.
