Playa de Torreguadiaro

Playa de Torreguadiaro is the 1.3 km beach of a fishing village in San Roque beside Sotogrande, named after two old watchtowers restored in 2015, with fishermen still working the shore.

About Playa de Torreguadiaro

Playa de Torreguadiaro is the beach of Torreguadiaro, a small village in San Roque beside Sotogrande, at the eastern end of the Campo de Gibraltar. It runs for about 1,300 metres between the village and the Sotogrande marina, roughly 30 metres wide.

The village began in the early 20th century as a fishing settlement, and fishermen still work from the beach. It is named after two watchtowers just west of the houses: the 15th-century Torre Quebrada, split by lightning, and the later Torre Nueva, both restored in 2015. Behind the beach, the Laguna de Torreguadiaro is a small protected brackish wetland.

The greyish sand is mixed with small pebbles and the water is usually calm. The beach has held the Blue Flag and has lifeguards, toilets, showers, a children's area, sunbed, umbrella and water sports hire, and a promenade with places to eat. A free car park has more than 100 spaces, and Algeciras buses stop about 500 metres away.

June and September are best, with warm water and far fewer people than in busy July and August. Come in the morning, when the sun rises over the sea in front of you; on 16 July the village honours its patron, the Virgen del Carmen, with festivities on the beach.

Nearby places to visit

The sand continues to Playa de Sotogrande (1 km), the next beach along, beside the Sotogrande estate and its marina. In the other direction, the small cove of Playa de Cala Sardina (2 km) is backed by a residential development, and across the Málaga border lie Playa de los Toros (3 km), one of the least built-up beaches in Manilva, with natural dunes, and Playa de las Arenas (3 km), a semi-urban beach of golden gravel and coarse sand. Golfers can head inland to Sotogrande Golf (3 km), in one of Spain's best-known golf resorts. All are within a few minutes' drive along the A-7.
