Bodegas Muñana
High-altitude winery near Guadix whose vines grow at about 1,200 m in the badlands of the Granada Altiplano, ageing its reds in natural caves; visits by appointment.
About Bodegas Muñana
Muñana takes its name from the Arabic almunia, a farm for growing and pleasure. The winery describes itself as the highest commercial winery with its own vineyard in Europe: the estate covers more than 180 hectares at around 1,200 metres on the Altiplano, where days are hot and nights cold. It makes single-variety Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot and blends under the Muñana and Delirio names.
The guided visit covers the vineyard beside the bodega, the production area and the natural caves dug into the hillside, where barrels age at a constant temperature. It ends with a tasting of three wines and a selection of local cured meats. The Muñana 1188 range, named after the height of its vines, and the Flamenco white are sold in the shop.
Visits run all year by appointment for a minimum of six people; book at least three days ahead. The Ruta de los Vinos de Granada lists the visit at €30 per person (2026), and the office is staffed Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 15:00 for bookings. Over-18s only. The bodega is on the road from Graena to La Peza, about 10 km from Guadix; a car is needed and there is parking.
The harvest comes late at this height, in September and October, and spring brings almond and vine blossom. Summer nights are cool, and the bodega runs occasional wine, music and stargazing evenings. Tip: combine the visit with the Graena spa or a night in a cave house in nearby Purullena or Guadix.
