Mojácar Pueblo
Mojácar Pueblo is the whitewashed old town of Mojácar, its cube-shaped houses stacked about 175 metres up on the last spur of the Sierra Cabrera, 2 km inland from the Almería coast.
About Mojácar Pueblo
Mojácar Pueblo stands about 175 metres up on the last spur of the Sierra Cabrera, 2 km from the beach resort of Mojácar Playa, looking over the Río Aguas valley and the sea. A Nasrid frontier stronghold, it surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs by negotiation in June 1488. It joined Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España in 2013; around 1,600 of the municipality's 7,700 people live in the old village.
Below the village, the Fuente Pública has twelve spouts and a plaque recalling the 1488 pact. Climb through the Arrabal to the Puerta de la Ciudad, a 1574 arch, then on to Santa María, a stone fortress-church of about 1560, the Plaza Nueva mirador and the Mirador del Castillo at the top. Casa La Canana is a small house museum of early 20th-century life.
Mojácar is 90 km (55 minutes) from Almería by the A-7, with ALSA coaches and town buses up from the beach. Traffic is restricted: park free on Plaza del Rey Alabez and take the public lift up. Allow two to three hours. Some lanes exceed a 20% gradient and the Arrabal has steps, so wheelchair users should keep to Plaza Nueva and the church. It suits photographers and families.
Come in spring or autumn; July and August are hot and busy. Moros y Cristianos fills the streets on a weekend in mid-June and the San Agustín fiestas follow in late August. Try gurullos, migas, caldo de pimentón and Garrucha prawns. Bring a layer for sunset at the breezy Mirador del Castillo.
