Cazalla de la Sierra

Cazalla de la Sierra is a white town of about 4,600 people at 580 metres in the Sierra Norte de Sevilla, famous for its anís, with a vast Mudéjar and Renaissance church on its Plaza Mayor.

About Cazalla de la Sierra

Cazalla stands at about 580 metres in the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Natural Park, near Extremadura. The Arabs called it Castalla, 'strong town', and remains of its Almohad wall survive by the parish church; Fernando III took it in 1247. Its wines and later its anís made it famous, and in 1730 Philip V spent the summer here. About 4,600 people live in the town.

Plaza Mayor is dominated by Nuestra Señora de la Consolación, built against the old walls between the 14th and 18th centuries, joining a Mudéjar core to an unfinished Renaissance plan. The former convent of San Francisco holds the market and the Centro del Aguardiente (€1). On the Constantina road, the Cartuja de Cazalla, a Carthusian house from 1476, opens at weekends (€4).

Cazalla is about 80 km (1 hour 15 minutes) north of Seville by the A-432; buses run from Plaza de Armas, and trains stop at Cazalla-Constantina station, 8 km away. Park on the edge of the centre, which is hilly in places. Allow half a day. It suits food lovers and walkers.

Spring and autumn are best for walking; summer days are hot. The romería of the Virgen del Monte on the second Sunday of August is followed by the feria, and a living nativity fills the streets on the second Saturday of December. Try anís and licor de guindas, Iberian chacinas, game and goat's cheese. Tip: check opening hours before you go.
