Vía Verde de la Sierra Norte
An 18.5 km greenway on an old mining railway from Cazalla-Constantina station up the Rivera del Huéznar to the Cerro del Hierro, mostly asphalt, 251 m of gentle climb; free, train access.
About Vía Verde de la Sierra Norte
The Vía Verde de la Sierra Norte de Sevilla follows the branch line that carried iron ore from the Cerro del Hierro mines to the Seville–Mérida railway. It lies in the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Natural Park, also a UNESCO Global Geopark, and climbs the valley of the Rivera del Huéznar, through cork and holm oak dehesa, the open wood pasture of the Sierra Morena. Bridges, loading bays and a short tunnel survive from the railway.
The greenway starts by the car park at Cazalla-Constantina station and runs 18.5 km to the Cerro del Hierro mining village. The first 4 km are rough (Vías Verdes warned of deterioration in January 2026). The route then follows the river, crosses the Huéznar on railway bridges and reaches San Nicolás del Puerto, with a short detour to the Cascadas del Huéznar waterfalls. The last stretch passes a 100 m unlit tunnel to the Casas de los Ingleses. Height range 415–666 m.
Free and open all year; about 15 km is asphalt. Renfe Cercanías trains (C-3) run from Seville Santa Justa to Cazalla-Constantina, and Linesur buses (957 421 585) serve San Nicolás for one-way trips. Shade is frequent, and you can fill bottles at the Huéznar source. Paved sections suit families and wheelchairs.
Best from October to June; summer often passes 35 °C, so start early. Bring a light for the tunnel and 2 litres of water. Tip: ride up to Cerro del Hierro, walk its short karst trail and freewheel back to the station.
