Castillo de Almodóvar del Río
Castillo de Almodóvar del Río is a hilltop fortress of Moorish origin above the Guadalquivir, 25 km west of Córdoba, restored in 1901–1936 and seen as Highgarden in Game of Thrones.
About Castillo de Almodóvar del Río
A Roman fort probably stood on the hill, but the present castle grew from a Moorish fortress of about 760. It was rebuilt under Alfonso XI and fought over by Pedro I and Enrique II in the 14th century. Long abandoned, it was restored between 1901 and 1936 by its owner Rafael Desmaissières, 12th Count of Torralva. In 2025 it drew a record 104,000 visitors.
The self-guided route climbs the walls and the Square, Round and keep towers, with themed spaces including the dungeon, the armoury, a sword exhibition and the Throne Room. Projections and a documentary explain the restoration. Outside, the moat garden is laid out by type of vegetation and ends at a viewpoint. The neo-Gothic palace is a private residence.
Adults pay €10, children 5–13 €6 and students, over-65s and disabled visitors €8.50; the box office stops selling an hour before closing. Audio guides cost €3–5, and dramatised tours in Spanish cost €15. The castle tops a steep hill and the visit involves many stairs, so it is difficult for wheelchair users. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
Weekdays outside school holidays are quietest. From October to March it opens 11:00–14:30 and 16:00–19:00 on weekdays and 11:00–19:00 at weekends; on summer weekdays it opens 09:00–15:30. Look out for the medieval history days in spring and autumn.
