About Seville Museum of Fine Arts
The Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla occupies the former Convento de la Merced Calzada on the Plaza del Museo in Seville's old town. The convent was rebuilt in the early 17th century by Juan de Oviedo, and it is often called the most important painting gallery in Spain after the Prado.
Its strength is the Seville school of the Golden Age. The convent church, now Room V, is the most visited space: the altarpieces and canvases Murillo painted for Seville's religious houses hang beneath a domed ceiling decorated by Domingo Martínez in the 18th century. Zurbarán's paintings for local monasteries fill Room X, and Valdés Leal has Room VIII, while El Greco's portrait of his son Jorge Manuel and Pietro Torrigiano's terracotta Saint Jerome are further highlights. The fourteen rooms run chronologically through to 19th-century Romantic and costumbrista painting.
The three cloisters, the large Claustro Mayor among them, are lined with Sevillian tiles. Entry costs a token fee and is free for EU citizens with ID.
The museum is closed on Mondays and closes early on Sundays, so check current hours before going. From June to September, an afternoon visit escapes Seville's worst heat; the rest of the year, arrive at opening to find Room V quiet.
