Archaeological Museum of Seville

Closed for renovation until 2029. Seville's archaeological museum, home of the Carambolo Treasure and Roman finds from Itálica, fills a 1929 exposition pavilion on the Plaza de América.

About Archaeological Museum of Seville

Closed for renovation until 2029: the Museo Arqueológico de Sevilla has been shut since January 2020 for a major renovation designed by the architect Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra, timed to finish for the centenary of the 1929 exposition. The timetable has already slipped, so check the museum's official page before planning a visit.

The museum occupies the neo-Renaissance pavilion that Aníbal González designed as the Fine Arts Pavilion of the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, on the Plaza de América at the southern end of the María Luisa Park. It moved here in 1946 from the former Convento de la Merced.

When it reopens, the prehistoric and protohistoric rooms will again show the Late Bronze Age and the Phoenician and Tartessian cultures, while the Roman galleries draw largely on finds from Itálica, including an important group of sculpture from Hadrian's time. The highlight will be the Carambolo Treasure, 21 pieces of 24-carat gold from the 7th to 6th centuries BC found at El Carambolo in Camas, which the new project will display permanently in a secure room.

Meanwhile, the pavilion's exterior can still be seen from the Plaza de América. Visit the square early in the morning between October and May, when the park is cool and quiet.

Nearby places to visit

The museum is surrounded by other collections. Directly across the Plaza de América, the Museum of Popular Arts and Customs of Seville (100 m) fills the Mudéjar Pavilion, a good alternative while the archaeology museum is closed. The Military Historical Museum of Seville (800 m) is inside the Plaza de España. Towards the river, the Naval Museum Torre del Oro (2 km) occupies the 13th-century Almohad tower, while the Painter Amalio Museum (2 km), which holds most of Amalio García del Moral's work, is closed for maintenance. The Museum of Seville Cathedral (2 km) completes a walk into the old centre.
