Playa de Torre del Mar is the main beach of Torre del Mar, the coastal town of Vélez-Málaga in the Axarquía, on the eastern Costa del Sol. The town council's beach catalogue gives it 3.33 km of shoreline, divided into seven named stretches: Mortero, Laguna Chica, Faro, Larios, Copo, Protegidas and Melosas, the widest at 100 metres.

The sand is black, mostly fine, and a broad promenade runs behind five of the stretches; the council calls it the widest in Europe. The lighthouse, ringed by palm trees, stands by the Faro stretch. Six stretches have held Blue Flags, and the beach is set up for every age group: there are adapted bathing areas with step-free access, a dog beach at Mortero and a section reserved for over-55s at Protegidas. Espetos, sardines grilled on skewers over wood fires, are cooked at beach restaurants along the Larios stretch.

Lifeguard towers stand on most stretches, and facilities include sunbed and umbrella hire, boat hire, a nautical club, toilets and showers. The water is good for windsurfing and sailing.

June and September bring warm water and space on the sand, since occupancy is high in midsummer. Swim in the morning, then return at dusk for espetos.

Nearby places to visit

East along the coast, Playa de la Caleta de Vélez (2 km) runs beside the town's marina and fishing port, with a promenade and fine dark sand. For golf, Baviera Golf (3 km) is the closest course, just inland, while Añoreta Resort & Golf (14 km) lies to the west at Rincón de la Victoria. Inland, MVVEL Museum of Vélez-Málaga (5 km) is the town's museum and a good reason to visit the old centre. Playa de Lagos (6 km) further east is a quiet run of small coves with coarse sand and few services. All are an easy drive from the promenade.
