About Playa de San Miguel

Playa de San Miguel is one of the named stretches of Almería city's urban beach. That beach runs east of the port for about 3 km along the Avenida del Cabo de Gata, under names such as San Miguel, Las Conchas, Zapillo, El Palmeral and Nueva Almería. San Miguel is within walking distance of the old town, with the promenade behind.

The sand is dark and the water is usually calm, which makes it a practical family beach. Services are extensive: sunbed, umbrella and watersports hire, toilets, showers and footbaths, children's and sports areas, a sailing club, a surf practice zone and access for wheelchair users. The city marina is about 600 metres away.

Convenience is its strength, more than scenery. You can walk down from the centre, swim, and then try one of the bars and restaurants along the promenade for lunch.

Almería is one of the sunniest and driest cities in Spain, so the beach season is long. May, June and late September into October bring warm water and fewer people than July and August, when the beach is at its busiest. Go in the morning before the heat, or in the early evening, when locals come out to stroll along the promenade.

Nearby places to visit

The promenade leads straight on to Playa del Zapillo (700 m), the city's best-known beach, with plenty of bars along the seafront. In the other direction, Playa del Palmer (7 km) lies west of the city in the municipality of Enix, a smaller beach well away from the busy urban seafront. Golfers should head east to El Toyo, near the airport. The El Toyo Public Golf School (12 km) is a good place to learn or practise, and Alborán Golf (12 km) is next door. Both are easy to reach by car along the coast.
