Museum of Seville Cathedral
The Museum of Seville Cathedral is the collection shown in the cathedral's sacristies, chapter house and treasury, led by Juan de Arfe's silver Custodia Grande.
About Museum of Seville Cathedral
The Museum of Seville Cathedral is not a separate building but the collection shown in the sacristies, chapter house and treasury of the great Gothic cathedral on the Avenida de la Constitución. Its painting inventory runs to 833 entries, and its gold and silverware to around 900 pieces.
The Sacristía Mayor holds the Custodia Grande, the silver monstrance Juan de Arfe made between 1580 and 1587 and Pedro de Campaña's Descent from the Cross of 1547. In the Sacristía de los Cálices hangs Goya's Saints Justa and Rufina (1817), the city's patron saints, while the Sala Capitular has Murillo's Immaculate Conception, and Zurbarán and Valdés Leal hang in the Sala del Pabellón.
The Sala del Tesoro shows smaller pieces: an early 16th-century Lignum Crucis reliquary, a 14th-century Parisian pax, the 1904 crown of the Virgen de los Reyes and a Magdalene by Artemisia Gentileschi. Much was lost: during the French occupation, nearly half the great silver altar was melted down.
The rooms are seen on the general cathedral visit. Avoid Holy Week, when processions pass through the cathedral and visits change. Winter weekdays are quietest, and the first morning slot, before tour groups build up, is best for lingering in the sacristies.

The cathedral sits at the centre of a compact museum quarter. Just across the old Jewish quarter, the Painter Amalio Museum (300 m), devoted to the painter Amalio, is closed for maintenance. Towards the river, the Naval Museum Torre del Oro (400 m) fills the 13th-century Almohad tower, and the Flamenco Dance Museum (500 m), founded by the dancer Cristina Hoyos, explains the art through film and costume. Families can unwind at Minigolf Sevilla (900 m). For more Murillo and Zurbarán, the Seville Museum of Fine Arts (1 km) fills a former convent. All are within walking distance.
