Kayaking on the Iznájar Reservoir

Kayak and paddleboard hire from the freshwater Playa de Valdearenas on the Iznájar reservoir, Andalucía's largest, with double kayaks from €20 for 2 hours and SUP from €20 an hour (2026).

About Kayaking on the Iznájar Reservoir

The Embalse de Iznájar, on the river Genil along the Córdoba–Granada border, is Andalucía's largest reservoir and the base of the Estación Náutica Lago de Andalucía. Its Playa de Valdearenas, a 1.5 km freshwater beach about 1 km from Iznájar, has lawns and a dog area, and the village rises above on a rocky spur topped by the Moorish castle of Hisn Ashar.

Paddling here is flat-water touring rather than a fixed route. From Valdearenas most people follow the shore towards the village and the road bridge, round headlands of red earth and olive trees, or cross to quiet coves on the far bank, with herons and cormorants for company. Two hours covers a loop below the village; a full day reaches the long arms of the lake. Paddleboards suit calm mornings.

Alúa's Centro de Ocio at Valdearenas hires double kayaks for €20 (2 hours), €25 (3 hours) or €35 (up to 5 hours) per boat, and paddleboards for €20 an hour, €25 for 2 hours or €40 a day, with life jackets, dry bags and a briefing (2026). Minimum age is 7 for kayaks and 9 for SUP, and you must swim. Book ahead; wetsuits are available in winter. Water levels vary with rainfall.

May, June and September bring warm water without the summer crowds. Go in the morning, before the afternoon breeze raises a chop, and bring water shoes, a hat and sun cream. Afterwards, climb to the castle viewpoints above the bays.

Nearby places to visit

The launch is on the Playa de Valdearenas itself, so a swim and a picnic on the sand fit easily around a paddle. The white village of Iznájar (2 km) climbs to its castle and church above the water, with viewpoints over the reservoir. In Rute, the Anís Museum (8 km) and the Destilería Machaquito (8 km) explain the aniseed spirit the town is known for. For a harder day out, the permit-only La Tiñosa Ascent from Las Lagunillas (13 km) climbs to the highest summit in Córdoba province, which looks straight down on the lake.
