Arte de Cozina

Antequera restaurant opened by cook Charo Carmona in 1996, reviving old Málaga recipes such as porra antequerana and olla de castañas in a 17th-century house; it holds a Repsol Sol.

About Arte de Cozina

Charo Carmona, then a saleswoman of household linens, took over a bar on Calle Calzada in 1996 when its owners retired, at a time when few visitors came to Antequera. She later rented the adjoining 17th-century house, whose covered patio is now the dining room, with a small hostería upstairs; the original bar serves tapas. Working with food historian Fernando Rueda, she recovers old recipes from the province. Guía Repsol gives it one Sol.

About half the seasonal menu is recovered dishes. Porra antequerana is the local cold soup of tomato, bread, garlic and oil, thicker than salmorejo, served in several versions including one with orange. Others include olla de castañas (chickpea and chestnut stew), pelona de lomo (pork loin cooked slowly in lard), maimones (garlic soup), chivo a la pastoril (kid) and almojábanas, cheese pastries from al-Andalus. Each dish comes with a card giving its history and recipe.

The kitchen serves Monday to Saturday 13:00–16:00 and 20:00–23:00, and Sunday 13:00–16:00. Main dishes cost about €12–22 and a meal with Málaga wine about €30–40 per person (2026). Book online or by phone, especially for weekend lunch.

Lunch from 14:00 is the main service; dinner is quieter. Porra is best from June to September and olla de castañas in winter, when a fire burns in the dining room. Tip: visit the Dolmens of Antequera in the morning, then walk back for lunch.
