Honey Museum of Málaga
A small honey museum in Colmenar, a hill town in the Montes de Málaga whose name means 'apiary', tracing 8,000 years of beekeeping and ending with a tasting of local honeys.
About Honey Museum of Málaga
The Casa Museo de la Miel de Málaga is a small honey museum on Calle Pósito in Colmenar, just behind the town hall. Colmenar is a hill town in the Montes de Málaga, inland from the city of Málaga, and its name means 'apiary' in Spanish.
The interactive themed rooms trace beekeeping from its origins some 8,000 years ago to modern practice, showing how apiaries are run and how honey travels from flower nectar to the jar. Other displays cover the uses and properties of hive products, the life of bees in the wild, the beekeeper's work and conservation, with a section that shows the inside of a working hive.
The museum puts the spotlight on honeys from the province of Málaga, which you can taste and buy at the end of the visit. Groups and guided tours need booking in advance by phone or email, and opening hours have varied over the years, so check before setting out.
Spring is the best season, when the hillsides are in flower and the bees at their busiest. Come in the morning, when guided visits run and the hours are longest, then have lunch in town before driving back down to the coast.

Nearby places to visit
The closest stop is the Riogordo Ethnographic Museum (4 km) in the neighbouring village, a collection on traditional rural life that pairs well with the honey museum. From Colmenar the road drops through the Montes de Málaga to the eastern edge of the city, where Real Club de Golf El Candado (20 km) is a hilly course above El Palo. Below it, the Playas del Palo (21 km) front the old fishing district, known for sardines grilled on skewers. Further east, Playa de la Araña (22 km) and Playa Cala del Moral (22 km), in Rincón de la Victoria, are quieter beaches for an afternoon swim.
