Mercado Ingeniero Torroja
Algeciras's main food market sits under a thin concrete dome 47.76 m across, designed by engineer Eduardo Torroja and architect Manuel Sánchez Arcas and completed in 1935.
About Mercado Ingeniero Torroja
The market replaced an arcaded market of 1827 on Plaza Baja. Architect Manuel Sánchez Arcas and engineer Eduardo Torroja drew up the design in 1933, and it was built between 1934 and 1935. The concrete shell spans 47.76 metres, is only 9 cm thick at the centre and rests on eight pillars around a 10-metre skylight; it is often cited as the world's widest dome until 1965. It was listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2001.
Stalls are set in concentric rings beneath the dome, and fish is the heart of the trade: look for prawns, anchovies, swordfish and tuna from the Strait. Butchers, charcuterie counters and greengrocers fill the rest, with more produce sellers in the square outside. Several bars inside serve breakfast, tapas and drinks.
Stalls open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 14:00; the bars stay open until 16:30 on Fridays and Saturdays. The market is a ten-minute walk from the ferry port, and the hall is on one level with step-free entrances. It suits architecture enthusiasts, travellers waiting for a ferry to Tangier or Ceuta, and self-caterers.
Come early: the fish is freshest between 08:00 and 11:00, and many stalls close soon after midday. Stand in the centre of the hall to see the skylight and the full sweep of the shell, and on Friday or Saturday finish with a late lunch at one of the bars.
